For kids: 🐾
We don't know who you are. We don't keep your name, your face, or what you searched. We just help you find safe answers. Ask a grown-up if you have any questions!
sqiigl is a kid-safe search engine designed for children ages 5–12. We follow the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA, 16 CFR Part 312). This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the rights parents have.
Who we are
This site is operated by sqiigl. To reach our privacy team, email privacy@sqiigl.com.
What we collect from children (and what we don't)
By default, sqiigl is an anonymous experience. When a child browses or searches the site without a parent account, we do not collect personal information from the child. Specifically:
- No name, email, address, phone number, or photo is requested.
- No login is required for kids.
- Favorites and recent searches are saved only in the child's browser (localStorage). We never see them.
- Search queries are cached on our servers for up to 24 hours as plain text to make popular questions faster. The cache is not linked to a user, account, IP address, or device.
If a parent creates an account and links their child, we additionally store: a parent-chosen nickname (not the child's real name), an age band (5–7, 8–10, or 11–12), and — only with verified parental consent — a record of that child's searches and viewed items inside sqiigl.
What we collect from parents
Parent accounts use email + password authentication. We store the parent's email address and account metadata. We never sell parent or child data.
How information is used
- To run the search and answer features safely.
- To remember a parent's preferences (e.g., topics they've blocked).
- To show parents a record of their own child's activity, if they've consented.
- To comply with the law.
We do not use information for advertising, behavioral profiling, or sale to third parties.
Who we share information with
To produce kid-safe answers we send the search query text only (no identifier) to these services:
- Wikipedia / Wikimedia — factual lookups.
- TMDB — movie/TV info.
- ESPN public RSS — kid-safe sports headlines.
- Firecrawl — supplementary web context.
- Lovable AI Gateway — language-model rewriting into kid-friendly text.
We also use Lovable Cloud (Supabase) as our hosting and database provider.
We do not sell or rent personal information to anyone.
Verifiable parental consent (COPPA §312.5)
Before any personal information is collected about a child through a parent account, we obtain verifiable parental consent using the FTC-approved "email-plus" method: the parent confirms via an emailed link, and we send a second confirmation email 24 hours later. The child-data features unlock only after the second confirmation.
A parent can revoke consent at any time from the parent dashboard. Revocation deletes all stored child data.
Parents' rights
Parents may, at any time:
- Review the information we have collected about their child.
- Delete any or all of that information.
- Refuse further collection.
All three are self-serve in the parent dashboard (/parent) or by emailing privacy@sqiigl.com.
Data retention
Anonymous search-cache entries are deleted after 24 hours. Parent and child records are kept until the parent deletes them or closes the account, then deleted within 30 days.
Security
We use industry-standard transport encryption (HTTPS) and row-level access controls on our database so parents can only see their own family's data.
No ads, no tracking
sqiigl shows no third-party advertising and uses no behavioral tracking pixels, ad SDKs, or analytics that profile individual children.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes, we'll notify parent account holders by email and post the change here.
